An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering, working with Prof. Richard Butler and Dr Andy Rhead on next-generation technologies for composite aerostructures.

Following decades of relative stability, the aerospace sector is open to disruption through the combination of environmental imperatives and ageing aircraft fleets. The EPSRC Prosperity Partnership ZENITH (Zero Emission: the Next-generation of Integrated Technologies for Hydrogen), between GKN Aerospace and the ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ, aims to position the UK as a leader in the field in emerging zero emission aircraft.

ZENITH will develop fundamental new knowledge and understanding and deliver globally differentiated solutions in hydrogen energy storage and structures technologies which will have a clear impact on the UK’s aerospace industries and the UK’s 2050 Net Zero targets.

Your role on the project will involve development of reduced order damage models (nonlinear FEA) and new analytical techniques for application of non-standard laminate designs to bonded, postbuckled composite structures. The new methods will be validated using experimental data and statistical theory, to enable rapid certification and high-rate production of optimised structures.

You will be working alongside three other Post-Doctoral Researchers and associated PhDs. Significant collaboration with the industrial partner is expected.

This position is offered on a full-time basis, fixed term from 1st April 2025 to March 2028.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

 • a PhD in a relevant subject area within Engineering
 • experience of numerical methods for structural analysis
 • the ability to organise own workload to meet deadlines
 • demonstrable awareness of the latest developments in this field

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

<![CDATA[Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering (FM12316)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM12316 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=FM12316 About the role

We are seeking a Lecturer to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering, undertaking high-quality research and teaching. We are particularly interested in disciplinary research expertise in one of the following areas:

 • fluid dynamics
 • thermodynamics and heat transfer
 • aerodynamics
 • biofluid mechanics
 • turbomachinery
 • automotive propulsion

These research areas are aligned with Faculty research centres, including IAAPS, a world-leading centre of excellence supporting the transport industry in the transition to net zero. Teaching will support our MEng undergraduate degree programmes, including Mechanical, Aerospace, Automotive, Manufacturing and Management, Integrated Design, and Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, as well as new MSc programmes under development. Our degree programmes have an outstanding reputation built on industry-linked teaching, rigorous academic standards, placement-provision, and graduate employability. As well as lecturing, you will be expected to participate in supervising students undertaking significant individual and group projects encompassing research or design activities.

We are one of the leading Mechanical Engineering departments in the UK and provide a progressive academic environment. You will benefit from the supportive, collaborative and well-organised Department and Faculty system at the University.

About you

You will have a PhD (or equivalent) and developing research track record in one of the above areas. You will be expected to publish high-quality research papers, supervise postgraduate research students, and have the potential to apply for and attract significant external research funding. You will also engage with one or more of our Faculty-wide inter-disciplinary research centres covering energy (generation, transmission and storage, including future fuels), Net Zero, biomedical engineering, sustainability and climate change adaptation.

You will be a kind and culturally aware leader who fosters an environment where every individual is valued and respected, regardless of their background or identity. You will understand that change is inevitable and necessary, actively encouraging your team to adapt and evolve. By promoting a culture of openness and inclusivity, you will create a dynamic and empowered team that can thrive in today's changing world.

Application requirements

As well as your online application, you must provide the following uploaded as additional documents (these are mandatory):

 1. A CV of no more than 4 pages, covering current and key previous employment, education including degree titles/departments/universities, published journal and conference papers, and a brief summary of research and teaching experience. Note that this may be distributed within the Department for comment as part of the recruitment process and please ensure that personal contact details (address/phone/email) and any other sensitive information are not included. The document should be called ‘4-page CV’.
 2. A four-page outline of a potential research grant application and be prepared to discuss this at interview. Typically for Lecturer grade applicants, this application would be aimed at the EPSRC New Investigator Award and it would be expected that the successful candidate submits this within the first year of the appointment. The document should be called ‘Research proposal’.

You may upload other documents if you wish.

Within the selection process, you will normally be required to give a presentation to academic staff in the Department before being shortlisted for formal interview.

Further information
