An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering, working with Prof. Richard Butler and Dr Andy Rhead on next-generation technologies for composite aerostructures.

Following decades of relative stability, the aerospace sector is open to disruption through the combination of environmental imperatives and ageing aircraft fleets. The EPSRC Prosperity Partnership ZENITH (Zero Emission: the Next-generation of Integrated Technologies for Hydrogen), between GKN Aerospace and the ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ, aims to position the UK as a leader in the field in emerging zero emission aircraft.

ZENITH will develop fundamental new knowledge and understanding and deliver globally differentiated solutions in hydrogen energy storage and structures technologies which will have a clear impact on the UK’s aerospace industries and the UK’s 2050 Net Zero targets.

Your role on the project will involve development of reduced order damage models (nonlinear FEA) and new analytical techniques for application of non-standard laminate designs to bonded, postbuckled composite structures. The new methods will be validated using experimental data and statistical theory, to enable rapid certification and high-rate production of optimised structures.

You will be working alongside three other Post-Doctoral Researchers and associated PhDs. Significant collaboration with the industrial partner is expected.

This position is offered on a full-time basis, fixed term from 1st April 2025 to March 2028.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

 • a PhD in a relevant subject area within Engineering
 • experience of numerical methods for structural analysis
 • the ability to organise own workload to meet deadlines
 • demonstrable awareness of the latest developments in this field

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

Further information

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Professor Richard Butler at ensrb@bath.ac.uk or Dr Andy Rhead at a.t.rhead@bath.ac.uk.

As a member of Research Staff at the ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

<![CDATA[Disability Advisor (CC12152R)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=CC12152R /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=CC12152R Student Support & Safeguarding is seeking to appoint experienced professionals to this exciting role, with responsibility for providing disability related information and advice to students seeking guidance and support.

About the role

Working as part of the Disability Service you will provide high-quality advice and support to disabled students by assessing and identifying needs, recommending relevant and personalised reasonable adjustments that enable them to access their studies and remove barriers to their success. This will include assisting students to access specialist funded support such as Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) to help meet their individual support needs.

You will work collaboratively to co-ordinate support across a range of University professional services, academic departments and external agencies regarding disabled student cases, establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with colleagues to ensure effective signposting and referrals in response to risk, complex need or specialist services.

A significant proportion of your time will be spent conducting appointments with students. Most appointments will be in person (on ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ premises), although you will at times also meet with students remotely (especially during the pre-arrival period).

You will:

 • be able to demonstrate an ability to self-organise, set priorities and work flexibly and effectively as part of a team.

However the exact number of days on campus each week may need to alter in relation to student demand through the year. The department supports flexible working requests and encourages these to be explored through the recruitment process, although the student-facing nature of this role and the requirement to provide a face-to-face service means that your days working on campus will need to be agreed and committed to as part of your team’s overall operational planning.

A Disclosure & Barring Service check will be required for this role.

<![CDATA[Marie Curie PhD Fellowship (CH12326)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=CH12326 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=CH12326 About the role

The International Dimensions and Effects of Populism (IDEoPOP)

The Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies at the ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ is seeking to appoint two fully funded PhD Fellowships to join European Union’s Horizon Europe Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions-Doctoral Networks/UKRI for a duration of 36 months.

PhD1: Regional and international populist orders

This project analyses how populists conceive of regional and international orders. This project will provide an understanding about whether populist governments and leaders have an overall unitary conception of international order or whether this conception is segmented and depends on geopolitical factors such as belonging to specific regional orders, notions of regions and regionness as type of subsystem and order. In order to capture the expected diversity of understandings of international orders out there, the study cases will have a cross-regional dimensions, like for example, India, Turkey, Brazil and the US as well as other populist experiences. In this way, this project will also contribute to the further understanding of the reciprocal nexus of regions and international orders.

PhD2: Populist branding in international politics

This project analyses how populist leaders brand themselves in international politics. This project will bring together different theoretical elements of comparative electoral politics such as electoral branding of candidates, and electoral marketing, and foreign policy elements such as roles and identity aspects of the state to analyze how populist leaders when acting internationally also promote a type of self-brand which is used for further domestic and international identification. This project will also unveil the type of relationships that populist leaders seek to advance and locate internationally. Within this relational dimension the project also analyses whether this brand is welcomed and accepted by domestic actors and by international peers and institutions, or whether the brand as performed is challenged and adjusted as being contested. A priority for Latin American case studies (at least to a certain extent) will be given, like for example, the case of J.Milei in Argentina, J.Bolsonaro in Brazil, N.Bukele in Salvador, and AMLO in Mexico.

Within this structure, the Dean’s Office is a central hub that coordinates and supports PS delivery to align with SoM strategy. Each team is comprised of a range of differentiated roles to reflect functional specialisms as well as the scale and breadth of responsibilities held. Within each team, more senior roles reflect not only greater and broader responsibilities, but also contributions to the strategic leadership of the team’s work.

Outside of the Dean’s Office, the Alumni Relations & External Engagement team manages the SoM’s relationships with a range of key stakeholders, notably including: SoM alumni; corporations; charitable organisations; industry bodies; and government. To secure the greatest, strategically aligned relational benefits to the SoM, the team seeks to strengthen and build mutual value into alumni relations and develop the SoM’s portfolio of relationships with external organisations. For the latter, the team’s work comprises a mix of relationship management (i.e. engaged stewardship of ongoing relationships) and business development (i.e. the identification and realisation of opportunities for new relationships that align with SoM strategy). Consistent with this, the PSS staff in the Alumni Relations & External Engagement team work collaboratively with academics in roles that carry responsibilities relating to external engagement (e.g. most notably, the Associate Dean for International).

The Alumni Relations & External Engagement team is structured into two sub-teams to reflect its delivery of two distinct SoM functions: Alumni Relations (which relates to a range of activities that engage with the SoM’s previously-graduated students, including event organisation, communications and information management); and External Engagement (which covers the management and development of a range of SoM relationships, including single or multi-strand relationships with corporations, charities and government bodies).

Reporting to the Director of Operations in the SoM, the Head of Alumni and External Engagement is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Alumni Relations and External Engagement team. The post-holder contributes to the strategic leadership of the sub-teams within the Alumni Relations & External Engagement team and ensures the provision of effective PSS support to the Associate Dean (International).

<![CDATA[Research Assistant/Research Associate (CH12254)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=CH12254 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=CH12254 The Department of Education is seeking a Research Associate with expertise in international student mobility (ISM) to join the Open Research Area (ORA) project ‘Virtual Mobilities of International Students: towards a new model for the internationalisation of higher education?’ (VIRMOBS).

VIRMOBS is an international comparative project led by Social Scientists in Canada, France and the UK. VIRMOBS examines the implications of virtual mobilities (namely forms of ISM where students enroll on online distance education programmes outside their home countries) for learning, cultural experience, social inclusion and the value of credentials. It asks: are virtual mobilities more sustainable, inclusive forms of ISM, or are they low-value alternatives likely to exacerbate existing inequalities? How do different national policy and regulatory contexts influence the shape and impact of virtual mobilities?

VIRMOBS will combine socio-history, quantitative and qualitative methods to examine the national, institutional and individual logics underpinning virtual mobilities in Canada, France and the UK. We will conduct documentary research, student surveys and interviews with staff and students in the three countries.

You will join the UK team and be based in the Department of Education at the ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ. You will contribute to all aspects of the project with a primary focus on the UK case. This will include conducting literature reviews and document analysis, designing the research instruments, setting up and conducting interviews and contributing to statistical and qualitative data analysis. You will collaborate with UK, France and Canada-based researchers, help manage and archive project data, present findings at national and international conferences and contribute to scholarly publications with the project team.

This role is offered on a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed term basis from the 01 May 2025 with an expected duration of 33 months.

As a member of Research Staff at the ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

About you

You will have:

 • A PhD in a social science discipline such as Sociology, Geography or Education (if you are applying for Research Associate level).
 • Expertise in qualitative or mixed research methods.
 • A good understanding of quantitative research methods.
 • A very good knowledge of the literature on international student mobility and/or global educational inequalities.
 • A good understanding of the UK Higher Education landscape and policy context.
 • Demonstrated potential to publish in high quality, peer reviewed journals.
 • An ability to work independently and collaboratively.
 • Excellent project management skills.
 • Proficiency in French is very desirable.

We will address this major policy challenge by carrying out the first quasi-experimental evaluation of the Opportunity Areas programme, a £100million national area-based initiative that sought to close gaps in social mobility between different regions and places of the UK. It was a long-term investment in areas of the country that have the most pronounced levels of deprivation and where social mobility is the lowest. Working with our local authority partners, the Department for Education and other third-sector organisations, our research will help to shape future area-based education and social policy.

This advertised post relates to the ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ-based Research Assistant. Running concurrently in this recruitment round is a further Durham-based Research Associate post advertised separately by Durham University.

They will implement the knowledge exchange and impact strategy for the project, working with impact lead Dr Ceri Brown. This involves working with Dr Brown to engage key stakeholders, ensuring their knowledge is inputted into the project as well as key policy-learnings successfully impact policy and practice at national, regional and local levels.

These posts represent an excellent opportunity for early career researchers wishing to develop an academic career in public policy research – those appointed will receive mentoring from the senior colleagues involved in the project to develop co-authored and sole-authored outputs in leading academic journals that are world-leading in quality.

As a member of Research Staff at the ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year

 1. Creating and testing simple and widely available support for common mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. This includes using digital treatments.
 2. Improving understanding, awareness, and treatment for mental health difficulties in young people who have conditions such as autism and ADHD.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work closely with Dr Tobias Barker on the analysis of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations (and related partial differential equations).

The candidate will have a strong background in the rigorous analysis of partial differential equations describing fluids (or describing other related physical phenomena).

This position is part of Dr Tobias Barker's EPSRC funded project "APP11616: Dynamics and regularity criteria for nonlinear incompressible partial differential equations", whose themes and objectives are to:

 • Establish necessary conditions for singularity formation for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, that are convenient for numerical searches for singular solutions.
 • Rigorously construct solutions of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations and Euler equations that display certain features consistent with physical observations.

The successful applicant will be part of a very active Analysis group at the ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ, with several faculty members having expertise in fluid PDEs. The Analysis group runs a weekly Analysis seminar during semester, often hosting internationally renowned researchers.

The duration of this position is 18 months, with a start date of 1 April 2025 (negotiable) has no associated teaching obligations and has associated funding for conference attendance and training, as well as visa expenses.

About you

The ideal candidate will be a talented researcher in nonlinear partial differential equations with the ability to produce in collaboration new, original results concerning the rigorous analysis of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations (mainly singularity formation mechanisms and dynamics of solutions).

The ideal candidate will possess a PhD degree and postdoctoral experience in the rigorous analysis of partial differential equations describing fluids (or describing other related physical phenomena). It would be advantageous (though not essential) for the candidate to have experience with scientific computing.

Additional information

Candidates are required to submit a 1 page cover letter, a full curriculum vitae (including a list of publications) and a 2 page research statement outlining past research achievements and future research plans.

Specific enquiries related to the post may be sent to Dr Tobias Barker (email address: tb2130@bath.ac.uk).

As a member of Research Staff at the ºÚÁÏÍø³Ô¹Ï±¬ÁÏ, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.
